Challenge
In search of inspiration I leaned on familiar symbols I've encountered in my life and was drawn to Adinkra symbols which both my father and I have tattooed on our arms. Adinkra is a visual language from the Akan people of Ghana, comprising 130 symbols each with their own meaning.
Objective
I sketched broken-down elements of various symbols, then created letters by remixing the elements into new forms. I experienced a breakthrough with the letter H, inspired by the loop in the symbol Mpatapo, knot of reconciliation. I designed each letter to feel intentional, intertwined, and imperfect like the hand-carved stamps used by locals in Kumasi, Ghana, which I visited in 2021. I sketched each letter by hand creating a unique style, letter by letter. Sketching is my strength, it's where the soul of the font lives. Later, I translated my sketches into a digital rendering using Illustrator.
Results
For this project, I applied a design process I previously learned to a new task, and discovered an appreciation for typography. This project challenged me to apply my artistry in a new format and expanded my understanding of my capability as a multifaceted designer.
